Fibre Art at the World of Thread Festival

Fibre Art by a Canadian Artist

Want to feel motivated and inspired? Then get yourself to a festival or conference. I have been lucky enough to attend two so far this year, and awe-inspiring doesn’t do justice to some of the exhibition pieces I have seen.

The Ontario Hooking Craft Guild Conference (OHCG) was held at the beginning of May at the Deerhurst Resort. It was a remarkable day; not only for the conference and rug exhibits, but also for the people I met and networked with. As the 50th anniversary of the OHCG it made it a very special day for all who attended. While there and chatting away, I was sharing my passion for fibre art and was challenged to get into action and produce a fiber art piece for the “As the Crow Flies” Fibre Art Exhibition.

This is to take place at The Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre May 2017. The exhibition is to link into Canada’s 150th celebration; artists and media will all be involved. I was also at the World of Threads exhibition in Oakville, Ontario. Hadn’t been for a while, last time it was the 20th anniversary of World of Threads in 2014. It was amazing both times, the artistry and imagination of the artists is phenomenal. I especially like the artist, Heather Komus who works in diverse materials such as squid and pig intestines! Another artist I like is Alice Vander Vennen, who also works with different materials and describes her own work as textile assemblage – wonderful work. Never been? Mark the dates for next year and plan to go, it really is worth it.
